THE SITE
Located close to Mitcham Town Centre, the site is bound by Portland Road to the north, Western Road to the east, Field Gate Lane to the south and Hay Drive / Brickfield Road to the west. The houses located on Hay Drive and Brickfield were constructed on land that historically formed part of the wider gasworks site.
Site access is currently prohibited with walls and fences along the site boundary. Redeveloping the gasworks will provide an opportunity to open up a site that has been closed off to the public for over a century.

SITE HISTORY
Mitcham Gasworks opened in 1867, historically contained five gasholders and was used to produce gas until the 1960’s. The site was then used as an office for National Grid up until March 2006.
Technological improvements in the production and storage of gas have resulted in gasholders becoming redundant, providing the opportunity for the site to be redeveloped.
In recent years the London Borough of Merton have identified the need for redevelopment of the site to help provide much needed new homes.
